The theater is back at the Arts & Science Center!

While social-distancing measures have prevented the traditional in-person theatrical experience the past few months, ASC’s dedicated performance volunteers and staff are creating a production that viewers anywhere can enjoy.

Clue: Stay-At-Home Version will be available for viewing online at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020. The production will stream through the BroadwayOnDemand.com service.

Tickets on sale now at asc701.org/clue. They are $15 each, plus a $4.95 processing fee from Broadway on Demand. Viewers will be asked to sign up for a free account with the service. Streaming instructions are included at the link above.

The production is sponsored by Simmons Bank, Explore Pine Bluff, and UALR Public Radio FM 89.1 KUAR/90.5 KLRE.

Based on the 1985 Paramount movie — which was inspired by the classic Hasbro board game — Clue is a farce-meets-murder mystery.

The tale begins at a remote mansion, where six mysterious guests assemble for a dinner party “where murder and blackmail are on the menu.” When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects.

“It’s an absolutely hilarious spin on the ‘Who done it?’ genre, full of slapstick humor and hilarious one-liners that are sure to leave our audiences laughing ’til they cry,” said ASC Theater Education Coordinator Lindsey Collins

The small cast consists of veteran ASC performers, with Collins directing. (She directed ASC’s recent productions of A Christmas Story), Legally Blonde The Musial, and Sister Act: The Musical.)

“Working with this group is like working with family, and I am thrilled to have them all be a part of this endeavor,” Collins said.

Led by the Wadsworth the Butler (Eddie Beard), Miss Scarlet (Susan Harris), Professor Plum (Jonathan R. Hoover), Mrs. White (Tracy Sutherland), Mr. Green (Bryan Altstatt), Mrs. Peacock (Rilla Chandler), and Colonel Mustard (Martin Carty) race to find the killer as the body count stacks up.

The rest of the cast includes Celeste Alexander, Andy Altstatt, Sean Commerford, Cindy England, RJ England, Maegan Hickerson, Matthew Howard, Bill Wiegand, and Stephanie Wiegand.

“It’s a funny show. There’s some great dialogue in it,” co-star Martin Carty said. “The writing is wonderful for this thing. It’s very Mel Brook-ish, because there are inferences to other things and to the game itself and they’re all woven in the dialogue. It’s very clever.”

Carty, most recently seen as The Old Man in ASC’s 2019 production of “A Christmas Story,” has appeared in, directed, and worked behind the scenes of dozens of ASC productions.

Following the difficult decision this summer to postpone the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns, staff and volunteers immediately began exploring alternatives to a traditional show.

“Going from performing in front of a live audience to doing virtual recordings is definitely a big change, but the love of performing flows out of this cast like a geyser,” Collins said.

The production is recorded in advance and edited, much like a movie, she explained. This also allows for the actors to maintain social distancing; the performers are usually recorded separately with the camera on one actor at a time.

In the occasional scene that here two people in the same shot but they are far enough apart to not break any protocols.

“The talents of this group, mixed with this hilarious script, will bring our virtual audience into the folds of this production in a different, yet somehow familiar way, while entertaining them all the same.”
