ASC celebrated the opening of the exhibitions Whimsy & Flights of Fancy and Reunion with a free public reception on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020.

Whimsy artists Eric Freeman, Katherine Strause, and Sherry J. Williamson, along with Reunion’s Catherine Burns and Scinthya Edwards were on hand to make remarks.

Dr. Lenore Shoults, ASC curator and former executive director, was also honored during the reception on her last day before retirement.

Whimsy & Flights of Fancy features bright and playful paintings by Freeman, Strause, and Williamson, which surround selections from the Arkansas Arts Center’s collection Playing Around: Toys Designed by Artists.

Whimsy is on display in the Kennedy Gallery through Saturday, April 25, 2020.

Reunion celebrates the 30th anniversary of ASC’s 1990 exhibition New Faces/New Directions: Emerging Pine Bluff Artists, which showcased Catherine Burns, Scinthya Edwards, Eric Freeman and James Hayes. Reunion features recent works by Burns and Edwards in the International Paper Gallery. With three of Freeman’s paintings in the adjacent Whimsy exhibition, and Hayes’ blown-glass sculpture Celebration Chandelier brightening the atrium, ASC has these four artists’ works within its walls for the first time since 1990.

Reunion is on display in the International Paper Gallery through Saturday, April 18, 2020.

Relyance Bank sponsors both exhibitions, with a special thanks to Richard and Margaret Dearnley for their contributions to the Toys Designed by Artists collection.
