Camps To Launch Kids Into Summer Fun

ASC Offers 10 Summer Camps Exploring Different Aspects of STEAM

By Kayla Earnest

ASC will offer three theater camps in summer 2022, for ages 7 to 20.

5… 4… 3… 2… 1… Blast off! Get ready to be launched into the atmosphere for some intergalactic fun with ASC’s 2022 Summer Camp series: “Space and Time.” This summer we will be offering 10 different camps, each exploring different aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

Our first camp of the summer is Theater Jr. Camp. It takes place June 6-10 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Taught by our Theater Programs Manager Lindsey Collins and longtime ASC theater volunteer Bethany Gere, this camp is for kids ages 7-11 who are interested in expressing their creativity through acting. The camp will end with a final showcase on Friday, June 10, at 6 p.m. where these pint-sized performers can show off their new skills.

Bethany Gere

Art Jr. Camp will take place June 6-10, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will be taught by our Education Programs Manager Shakeelah Rahmaan. (Note: Art Jr. Camp is now full and enrollment is closed.) Open to ages 7-11, this camp explores several different mediums and teaches the basics of sculpting, drawing, and painting. If you have a 7- to 11-year-old who is interested in both theater and art, then this week of activities is perfect for them! They can have fun with us all day long by taking Theater Jr. Camp in the morning and Art Jr. Camp in the afternoon.

Theater Sophomore Camp and Theater Senior Camp are both two-week long camps, taking place on June 13-17 and June 20-24. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., young performers ages 12-15 will explore character building, monologues, set construction, and other acting skills with returning instructor duo Lindsey Collins and Bethany Gere. On those same days, Senior Theater campers (ages 16-20) will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Both groups will come together on Saturday, June 25 at 2 p.m. to show off their new skills in a showcase  that will be open to the community on the Bellamy stage.

Susie Maynard

Art Pro Camp is open to aspiring artists ages 12-17, and will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 27-July 1. Our instructor for this camp is Susie Maynard, and she will be guiding students through lessons in different mediums. Campers will create unique artwork in both 2D and 3D using various materials.

We switch gears from visual arts to the art of cooking in CrEATe Lab Jr. and CrEATe Lab Pro camps the week of July 11-15. CrEATe Lab Jr. is for future foodies ages 7-11 and meets from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. CrEATe Lab Pro is for culinary campers ages 12-17 and takes place from 1-4 p.m. These camps are the perfect opportunity for students to learn food preparation skills in a hands-on manner, featuring foods from different times, places, and cultures all over the world. CrEATe Lab is taught by Faith Anaya, who is also the instructor for our CrEATe Lab series throughout the year.

Michael Merritt is returning to ASC to teach Film Camp, a course designed to teach students about using storytelling, filming, recording, and editing to express their creativity. Campers will work together to produce short films throughout the week. This camp will take place 1-4 p.m. July 18-22 and is open to aspiring filmmakers ages 12-17.

One of the new camps that we are offering this year is Vocal Performance Camp. We will be bringing back instructor Bethany Gere, accompanied by Melody Gere, to teach vocal techniques and work on both individual and group performances. The camp takes place June 27-July 1 from 1-4 p.m., and culminates in a showcase on July 1 at 6 p.m. where singers aged 12-20 can show off their new vocal skills on the Catherine M. Bellamy stage.

Another new camp that we are offering this year is Science Camp. Instructed by our Public Programs Coordinator Rhodes Daigle, this camp is for students ages 7-11. Campers will learn about different scientific principles, and there is a whole universe to explore! Our tiny scientists enrolled in this camp will meet from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 18-22.

Now that you know all about the different camps that we are offering this year, it’s your turn to prepare for launch! You can visit our summer camp page to register and apply for scholarships. It’s sure to be out of this world!
