By Morgun Henson

Artist and Lyon College professor Dustyn Bork will teach four workshops at The ARTSpace on Main, with the first one starting Tuesday, July 18.

The workshops are part of Bork’s four-week artist residency, from July 17 to Aug. 13, 2023. The residency is supported by a grant from Synergy Forum Inc.

Workshop offerings include color theory, collage, relief printmaking, and screenprinting. Each workshop is $35 for members and $45 for nonmembers. Participants under the age of 18 are eligible for a full scholarship, thanks to ASC’s Adopt-A-Camper donors. Apply for a scholarship here.

All workshops are from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at The ARTSpace on Main, 623 S. Main St.:

  • Screen Printing with Stencils (July 18 & 20) This creative and informational workshop is intended as a hands-on, experiential art class. We will explore printing methods and techniques to cut and print stencils. This will make it possible to create and recreate multiple copies of artwork. Participants will learn the necessary skills to apply this process and print at home without needing expensive materials or having to own their own press or dedicated facility. All ages.

  • “Color, Cut, Construct” — Color Theory and Collage (July 25 & 27) This hands-on workshop will examine a variety of color principles and theories in an introductory lecture and participatory color studies. Participants will explore color phenomena and apply this information learned in a fun and practical manner. The workshop will be split into two parts: first, painting with acrylic on paper in an abstract and free-form manner. Then in the second part, using those painted papers to cut and paste into new colorful spatial forms. Ages 16 and older.

  • “Making Multiples” — Relief Printmaking (August 1 & 3) This creative and informational workshop will examine a variety of relief printmaking tools and techniques. We will explore alternative materials to make it possible to create and recreate multiple copies of your artwork. Participants will then be able apply this process on their own and be able to print without needing expensive materials or having to own a printing press. Relief printmaking is a great way to include detail and design into your art. Ages 16 and older.

  • “Build and Color” — Color Theory for Painters (August 8 & 10) Children can explore the work of collage, art, and architecture by making a house inspired by art. This hands-on workshop will give young artists the opportunity to look at the work of artist Dustyn Bork and his colorful abstractions based on architecture. They will then make a piece inspired by his artwork using color and form. Each participant will make a three-dimensional version based on Bork’s colorful collages inspired by historic homes and architecture in Arkansas. Ages 5-12.

In conjunction with the residency, The ARTSpace is also hosting an exhibition of Bork’s recent work, Blueprints, in the Loft Gallery through Saturday, August 12.

In conjunction with the residency, The ARTSpace is also hosting an exhibition of Bork’s recent work, Blueprints, in the Loft Gallery through Saturday, August 12. Inspired by architecture in various stages of building, renewal, and rebuilding, Bork’s works in Blueprints incorporate techniques of collage, relief printmaking, and screenprinting. The color principles as well as the printmaking techniques on display in the exhibition are ones he will demonstrate in his workshops. (Blueprints is viewable during The ARTSpace’s visitor hours: 12-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.)
